Alec Soth "Gathered Leaves Annotated"

 

Alec Sothの"Sleeping by the Mississippi", "Niagara", "Broken Manual", "Songbook", "A Pound of Pictures"の5つの写真集を収録し、彼自身が注釈を入れた"Gathered Leaves Annotated"を購入。紙はざら紙で、写真の細部を観たい向きには適していないが、彼のアメリカに向けた大型PJ写真集が全部入りでお得感がある。彼の注釈は自筆なので、字の判別に苦労したが内容は非常に面白く、自分自身の心象風景に彼の写真がさらに入り込むようになった。

彼の写真には、なんとなく死（とそれの裏返しの）愛を感じることが多くあるが、死にも多く言及している。写真集を出した後に、撮影された人物の後日談で、亡くなっていることなどを知るにつれその思いが強くなった。

私は、この中では、"Broken Manual"という米国の隠匿者を捉えた写真集がなんとも鬼気迫るものを個々の写真から感じられて好き（いや好きというより衝撃を受ける感じ）なのだが、"Broken Manual"自体へは彼の”注釈”は少ない。むしろ、今、葉山の神奈川県立近代美術館でやっている彼の写真展で上映されているドキュメンタリー映画『Somewhere to Disappear』（2010）を観ると、彼が何を撮り・撮れなかったか（収録しなかった）も含めてよくわかり、さらに衝撃が広がると思う。

More than any other creative medium, photography is linked with death. When you go down into the cellar, you will need to face this darkness.

あと、葉山の図録でも（下記）だが、写真は言葉なしには成立しない（意訳）と言っていることはとても興味深い。

Photography is sometimes thought of as being a visual communication system free from constraints of language, but it doesn't work that way. Even if a book consists of nothing but pictures, the work inevitably processed through language by publishers, critics, and the general audience. I define myself as a photographer, not as a writer. Nevertheless, I need to be cognizant of the ways in which my work will be at least partially processed through language.
